Biodegradable vs Compostable: Why the Details Matter
Words like biodegradable and compostable are everywhere now. You see them on cups, straws, packaging, bags, takeout containers, and all kinds of products that claim to be better for the environment. The problem is that these terms are often overused, misunderstood, and sometimes used in ways that confuse people.

What does biodegradable actually mean?
The word biodegradable sounds simple. Most people hear it and think the product will break down in a reasonable amount of time. But scientifically, the term can be broader than that. A material may eventually break down over a very long period of time and still be described as biodegradable in a technical sense.
That is where the confusion starts. For most people, biodegradable usually means the product will return to nature within a practical timeframe. But without more detail, the word by itself does not always tell you how long biodegradation takes, what environment is required, or what is left behind. A product that takes hundreds of years to break down is very different from one that can biodegrade in active soil, water, compost, or marine environments.
That is why specific claims matter.
Compostable can be confusing too
Compostable is another term that sounds simple but can be misleading. Many people think of composting as a backyard pile of food scraps, leaves, and garden waste. But in the packaging industry, compostable often refers to industrial composting facilities with controlled heat, moisture, and processing conditions.
That distinction is important. Some materials marketed as compostable may require industrial composting conditions to break down properly. If those products end up in a backyard compost pile, landfill, ocean, or natural environment, they may not behave the way people expect.
This does not mean all compostable materials are bad. It means people need clear, honest information about where and how a product actually breaks down.
Why certifications matter
Because terms like biodegradable and compostable can be vague, third party certifications are important. Instead of relying only on broad claims, people should look for specific certifications and clear end of life information.
Terms like home compostable, soil biodegradable, water biodegradable, and marine biodegradable are more useful than simply saying eco friendly or green. They help answer the real question: where does this product biodegrade, and under what conditions?
How PHA is different
PHA, short for polyhydroxyalkanoates, is a family of natural polymers made by bacteria. Bacteria produce PHA as a form of stored energy, which means PHA has existed in nature long before humans ever walked the planet. It is already part of the natural world and is made by bacteria in living environments.
That matters because nature already knows how to handle PHA. In its clean and properly designed form, PHA can biodegrade in biologically active environments where microbes are present. The more active the microbial environment, the faster the material can break down.
A simple way to understand this is with a fallen leaf. A dry leaf sitting inside a book can stay intact for years, but that same leaf on a forest floor, surrounded by moisture, microbes, and insects, breaks down much faster and returns to the soil. PHA follows a similar idea. The environment matters.
PHA and microplastics
One of the biggest problems with traditional plastic is that it can fragment into smaller and smaller pieces over time. These fragments can become persistent microplastics.
PHA is different because microbes can consume it during biodegradation. If PHA naturally persisted in the environment, the oceans would already be filled with it because bacteria are constantly producing it. But it does not accumulate that way. It gets consumed.
That is one of the reasons PHA is so promising for single use products like cups, straws, and packaging.

Restaurants, events, takeout, and food service still rely on disposable products. For those situations, the material matters. PHA is not a license to litter
Biodegradable does not mean littering is okay. PHA products should still be disposed of responsibly. Better materials are only one part of the solution. Better waste systems, better education, and less unnecessary waste all matter too.
The goal is not to make waste acceptable. The goal is to make better materials for the disposable products that are still used every day.
